How would you describe 'The Garden of Earthly Delights'?

A weekly journey which can take you from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again.  It can be the soundtrack to the meditations of your mind but can open gateways to aural pleasure.  Anything is possible really and I take great delight in pushing the boundaries of what would be considered acceptable or predictable, tho sometimes I just like a nice tune.

What inspired the idea for 'The Garden Of Earthly Delights', including the name?

Well, I have been asked this question a few times and I used to have an airy-fairy reply sorted involving the Hieronymous Bosch painting and the erotic literature site with the similar name.  But the truth is sadly less controversial as it was the name of the first record I played on the show from XTC's 'Oranges And Lemons' LP.

When did 'The
Garden Of Earthly Delights' begin?

I first started doing the show in a green haze in the early 90's spinning a heady mix of heavy dub  On-U Sound, PIL and Pixies. I have always had total artistic freedom with CRMK so anything goes really and still does today; the limit is my imagination and record collection.  In the 70's my dad used to run a second hand shop called  'Sellit & Soon' and I soon experimented  on my friends with the weird and bizarre LPs old hippies used to bring in to sell in the shop.   From the psychedelic stuff on Vertigo and Harvest to the spoken word of Argo records, I would play sounds  on top of sounds and delight in messing with folks heads, even tho some of them were pretty messed up already!

Why do you do it and how much of your time does it take up?

I do it for the love of music and in search of a better mix than the last one I did. Its quite time consuming but is still a hobby really as I have never been paid for doing the show  in over 10 years and even my site is self financed. I will spend my Saturdays transferring the show from MD which I copy onto my hard drive & update the site as and when.

How is 'The Garden Of Earthly Delights' funded?

Through my own pocket! But I encourage folks to send me blanks & stamps if they like what they hear and would like to hear more.

How do you go about choosing your play lists (Top 10's etc) and where do you get the information from?

I have been lucky enough to build up a good relationship with my contacts at promo companies and labels over the years and they certainly look after me very well. I reciprocate with reaction sheets and mix cds from the show of course so they are familiar with what I do. I don't attract the attention of the more chart orientated companies; I'm just not predictably-radio-friendly I guess. There are plenty of second hand shops and car boot sales in
Milton Keynes too so I'm usually to be found head down in a cardboard box on a Sunday morning. Most record collectors/dealers are looking to buy to resell so they don't pick up on the more eclectic/weird rubbish I would rather be seeking out. My play lists are made up from those records I find myself drawn back to the most from the pick of the crop I find or get sent. Then of course there is the marvel that is Broadband and the incredible wealth of info on sites such as www.hertz-lion.com and www.absorb.org

What kind of audience is 'The
Garden Of Earthly Delights' targeting?

As the good Captain Beefheart once said "If You Got Ears, You Gotta Listen"... so anyone with ears would about cover it.

Do you have plans for additions to your site?

I have lots of ideas but am limited to space on some of my pages, I hope to have my Exotic LP Gallery up and running by the time you read this and will never tire of new ideas for mixes.  also have some live events coming soon  including the MK premiere for my re-scored version of Luc Besson's ATLANTIS on 10th October. Also a special Gardening eve in Leicester on Nov 15th.I have considered a Flash site but am happy keeping it simple for now but...watch this space :
